// THE DETAIL

Which UAE payment gateway should you pick?

There's no single best UAE payment gateway. The right choice depends on three things: your acquiring relationship, your customer mix (UAE-only vs international, B2C vs B2B), and your tolerance for PCI scope.

The main UAE players

Network International (NGenius) is the largest acquirer in the UAE. If you have a Network acquiring relationship, integrating directly to NGenius gets you the best rates and the cleanest settlement reporting. The integration is straightforward and well-documented.

Telr is the most popular PSP for SMBs. Easier onboarding than direct acquirers, good developer experience, supports most local schemes, integrates with most ERPs and eCommerce platforms out of the box. Pricing is higher than direct, but the trade-off makes sense for many businesses.

Checkout.com dominates for businesses with international card volume or technical sophistication. Best-in-class API, true global acquiring, excellent fraud tools, and the most flexible architecture if you want to build something custom on top.

Tabby and Tamara are BNPL essentials for B2C retail. Conversion lift is real (typically 15–25% on average order value) but settlement and reconciliation work differently — you need to design for partial payments and split refunds.

The 3DS v2 reality

UAE banks have been pushing 3DS Secure v2 hard since 2023. Done right, 3DS v2 is mostly frictionless — silent authentication for low-risk transactions, step-up only when needed. Done wrong, it breaks conversion on every transaction. Most gateway SDKs handle this for you, but custom integrations often get it wrong by not collecting the device data signals that enable silent authentication.

The PCI question

If you process card data in your own systems, you take on PCI DSS compliance — annual assessments, segmented networks, encrypted storage. For most businesses this is overkill. Hosted checkout (where the gateway hosts the card form) or transparent redirect patterns let you stay PCI SAQ-A, the lowest compliance burden. We default to this unless there's a strong reason for direct integration.

The payment engineers we work with have shipped integrations across all major UAE gateways. They know which gateways have the cleanest webhooks, which have unreliable sandbox environments, which have hidden fees in their MDR, and how to handle the edge cases — pre-auth holds, partial captures, refund-after-settlement, chargebacks.

// FREQUENTLY ASKED

Common questions

Which gateway has the best conversion in UAE?+
It varies by sector. For typical B2C retail: Telr and NGenius perform similarly when properly configured. Adding Tabby and/or Tamara usually adds 15–25% to conversion on cart sizes over AED 500. For B2B or international, Checkout.com tends to outperform on conversion for non-local cards.
How long does a gateway integration take?+
Hosted checkout: 1–2 weeks. Transparent / Direct API: 2–4 weeks. Adding multiple gateways (e.g., main + BNPL + wallet): typically 4–6 weeks total. Subscription billing add-ons: 2–3 weeks more.
Do I need PCI compliance?+
Only if card data touches your systems. Hosted checkout (gateway-hosted form) keeps you in PCI SAQ-A — minimal compliance burden, mostly self-attestation. We default to this. Direct API integration where you handle PAN data puts you in higher SAQ levels or full PCI DSS — substantial annual cost and effort.
Can you integrate Apple Pay and Google Pay?+
Yes. These are typically layered on top of an existing gateway integration. Setup includes Apple/Google merchant IDs, domain verification, and the tokenized payment flow. Adds about 1 week to a gateway integration.
What about recurring billing / subscriptions?+
Yes. We've built subscription billing on Telr, Network, Checkout.com, and Stripe. Includes dunning (failed payment retry), plan changes (prorated), trial flows, and customer billing portal. About 2–3 weeks beyond the base gateway integration.
Do you handle multi-currency?+
Yes — multi-currency support is mostly a gateway and acquirer question, but the integration layer needs to handle currency conversion display, dynamic currency conversion (DCC) flows, and settlement in multiple currencies. We've built this for cross-border eCommerce and SaaS.
